The University of Portland soccer season opens this weekend.
The men, ranked 15th in the nation by Soccer America, will meet DePaul at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Merlo Field. It will be the second game of the annual Nike Portland Invitational.
The Pilots, who won the tourney last year, will play Central Florida at 2:15 p.m. Monday. Washington plays in the opening game at noon each day.
The Pilot women, ranked second nationally, open today at Brigham Young, the defending Mountain West Conference champion. Portland beat BYU 2-1 last season. UP plays at Utah on Sunday.
UP will be without forward Christine Sinclair, who has led Canada to the semifinals of the Under-19 World Championships at Edmonton, Alberta. The Pilots hope to have her for next weekend's two tournament games at Notre Dame.
Pilot coach Clive Charles underwent hernia surgery on Wednesday, unrelated to the prostate cancer he is fighting, but hopes to be back for the men's opener.
