Open house highlights another new S.E. Loaves and Fishes Center
Although they've been open since October, the area's newest Loaves and Fishes Center held an Open House on July 27th to let area seniors know about their services.
Located on the lower level of the Clark Center Building, which also houses Catholic Charities, at 2740 S.E. Powell Boulevard, the center provides services similar to those offered at the Thelma Skelton center on S.E. Milwaukie Avenue at Center Street.
'We not only are seeing seniors coming in to today to learn more about this, the Dorothy Clark Center Loaves and Fishes Center - but also to visit with social service partner agencies,' said the organization's Julie Piper Finley, Director of Marketing and Communications for Loaves and Fishes Centers.
'IRCO, Impact Northwest, and other social service agencies have set up exhibits today,' Finley said. 'Seniors are meeting this Center's wonderful new chef, and meet other people with several organizations.'
Finley commented that the organization now operates 35 locations, and all of them are open to anyone age 60 and over, for lunch Monday through Friday, usually served between 11 am and 1 pm. 'For seniors who are not mobile, we also can bring lunch to them through our Meals on Wheels program.'
Taking a break from cooking, Chef Sasha Kaplan revealed that this isn't just another job to her.
'It's lovely to 'wake up' people's taste buds, and introduce them to food from different cuisines around the world,' Kaplan said. 'We're providing this food service at the time in their life when they're probably not able to travel easily. I offer our guests foods that come from different cultures, so they can experience the culture during lunchtime.'
Center Marvin Pohl reminded that the center is always looking for volunteers. For information or to consider volunteering, call 503/953-8150.
For seniors looking to find their nearest Center, call the city-wide number: 503/736-6325. That way we can match each person's address to the center closest to them.
