Reporter Ben Jacklet studied Portland's secret spy files with the help of Tribune researcher Anna Skinner and frequent Tribune contributor Helen Silvis, who built an index of the groups and people mentioned.

Jacklet, Silvis and Tribune reporter Jim Redden interviewed more than 40 people whose names appeared in the files, as well as police, city and other officials.
