Two drown at Kelley Point Park

Two men drowned Monday afternoon while they swam at Kelley Point Park.

Portland Fire and Rescue firefighters and divers were called at about 5:30 p.m. to the park along the Columbia Slough near North Marine Drive near St. Johns, where they discovered the two men, one 25 and the other 20, had drowned.

Witnesses said that the 25-year-old man had been swimming when he began to struggle. The 20-year-old jumped in to help him and also went under the water.

At about 6:55 p.m., Fire and Rescue divers pulled the 20-year-old man from the water and began to perform CPR, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. At about 7 p.m., divers located the second man and pulled him from the water, but he also died.

Firefighters have not been able to determine what caused the two men to disappear under the water.
