New app takes a hike through Forest Park

Portland's 5,170-acre Forest Park? There's an app for that.

Lincoln High School senior Dylan Gattey worked with The Forest Park Conservancy and Portland Parks and Recreation to develop the iPhone application that provides maps of the park and its more than 80 miles of trails for hiking, biking, walking and running.

'I love using Forest Park,' says Gattey. 'But I had never been able to find an app or tool to help me navigate it. So I thought, what better project to work on than a Forest Park mapping app, one that can benefit Portland park-goers for the long term?'

Gattey, 17, created the application as part of a school project. He taught himself the software and coding, pitched it to the Forest Park Conservancy, and has a milestone achievement before his senior year even starts.

The app showcases conservancy's 10-map set, the 'Hiking and Running Guide to Forest Park' in a digital format.

It was first available Friday through iTunes for iPhones.
