Editor Ann Charters has gathered together more than 100 essays, poems and stories by American cultural figures from the 1960s for 'The Portable Sixties Reader.' The collection, organized thematically, includes work by Lenny Bruce, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King Jr. and others.

Charters reads at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Powell's Books on Hawthorne, 3723 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.

Freedom writers

Andrew Kirkland, a former assistant police chief in Portland, and Ralph Temple, a former executive with the American Civil Liberties Union, speak about the new book 'It's a Free Country: Personal Freedom in America After September 11.' Scholars, politicians and cultural critics including Michael Moore, Matt Groening and Tom Hayden are among the contributors to the volume, which discusses the current state of civil liberties and state security.
