Parlor picks for cool licks

Cold fronts, sleet and driving wind do not deter Oregonians from getting their licks. Especially when there are new flavors to try. It would be a shame to wait around until summer to sample the deliciously creamy, butterfat-rich ice cream featured at these new parlors.
Scooter's Ice Cream Emporium
This quirky addition to the Southeast Belmont corridor of eateries and bars is an ice cream parlor with a couple of twists. Its commitment to local producers and ingredients can result in a cone of organic vanilla ice cream from Scio's Noris Dairy topped with marionberries and Oreo crumbles. The shop offers about a half-dozen organic ice cream flavors and twice as many nonorganic (but local) varieties from Cascade Glacier in Eugene ranging from bubble gum to pistachio-almond. YoCream yogurt is used to make blizzards of your own creation. Supplementing the familiar sprinkles and chocolate chips are candied ginger and dried cranberries add-ins. A soy-based, soft-serve ice cream approximation is available for vegans. Bonus: Feel like a kid again by browsing the odd adjacent toy store, Spoink.

Ice Cream Outlet
The arrival of the Ice Cream Outlet on Northeast Alberta Street allows you to indulge two cravings on the same block: superlative burritos and ultra-rich ice cream. The Ice Cream Outlet serves 29 flavors of Dreyer's ice cream (marketed as Edy's east of the Rockies), the top-selling premium packaged cream in the country. From butter pecan to rocky road, the scoops here are deliriously thick and creamy. The Ice Cream Outlet boasts sundaes, shakes and cones (try the delicate cinnamon waffle cone), as well as coffee, tea, pastries and sandwiches in a bright, immaculate storefront. And the young staff is super-friendly.
