On Jan. 1, 2002, an amended state law regarding smoking in public places took effect. The law requires that most places of employment be smoke-free, with the exception of businesses such as bars, taverns, places off-limits to minors and rooms being used for private purposes, including fraternal lodges and bowling alleys. It also prohibits local governments from passing more restrictive laws.
