Longtime announcer starts to say no to the road
Bill Schonely, who has called the radio play-by-play in nearly every Portland Beavers game the past two seasons, is cutting back his schedule.
Schonely, who turns 74 in June, will call all home games but cut back considerably when the Beavers are away from home. Schonely will work the club's first two Pacific Coast League road series, at Fresno and Sacramento, Calif., and 'the occasional road game' the rest of the season.
'It is time for me to back off a little bit,' says Schonely, the voice of the Trail Blazers from 1970-98. 'I will be doing a few extra things for Standard TV & Appliance, and I will be able to play some more golf.'
Rich Burk, Schonely's backup the past two seasons, probably will be the Beavers' regular road announcer.
Metropolitan Sports LLC has replaced Portland Family Entertainment as managing body of the Beavers and soccer's Portland Timbers. Metro Sports president Mark Schuster is 'actively searching' for radio stations to carry both of the teams' games this season.
