Joey Harrington of the Detroit Lions will compete in the 989 Sports Quarterback Challenge on Saturday in Santa Monica, Calif. The competition will air July 19-20 on CBS. Harrington, defending champion Jeff Garcia, Tom Brady, Mark Brunell, Brad Johnson, Kordell Stewart and Jeff Blake will go head-to-head in four skills competitions Ñ accuracy, speed and mobility, distance, and a no-huddle event. É Harrington attended a recent spring football practice at Notre Dame. 'We recruited Joey many years ago (at Stanford),' Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham said. 'He chose to stop and visit our campus, and I think that says a lot about Notre Dame.' É Oregon State football's Spring Game will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Reser Stadium. Oregon's spring football practice will conclude with a Spring Game at 1 p.m. on May 3 at Autzen Stadium. The PSU Spring Game is 7 p.m. on May 9 at Tigard High.
Jackie Stiles, star guard of the defunct Portland Fire, was inducted Tuesday into the Springfield (Mo.) Sports Hall of Fame. 'I don't know if I deserve (it),' she joked, 'since I'm currently unemployed and homeless.' É Bill Self, Kansas University's new basketball coach, made a good first impression on point guard Aaron Miles, from Jefferson High. 'He seemed real cool,' Miles said after Self left Illinois to replace Roy Williams. 'Coach Self said he likes to play defense and run, and that's what we love to do.'
The Giusti Memorial golf tournament is Saturday through Monday at Riverside Golf & Country Club. É Portland State won the Big Sky Conference women's golf tournament Wednesday. Viking senior Taya Battistella took the individual crown for the second time, and PSU junior Rebecca Randolph was second, five shots behind. The Viks edged Eastern Washington by nine strokes over the 54 holes. É Coach Clive Charles and the NCAA champion women's soccer team from the University of Portland will be grand marshals of the Southwest Airlines Grand Floral Parade on June 7. É Former UP star Shannon MacMillan was player of the week last week in the Women's United Soccer Association. É OSU's Monica Hoffman, a junior from Central Catholic, tossed her school-record fourth career no-hitter in a 9-0 softball win Tuesday over PSU. É UO steeplechase record-holder Carrie Zografos, a senior from Central Catholic, will race for the first time since the NCAA cross country championships at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene on Saturday. She has been sidelined with a hip injury.
Corvallis' Bob Gilder not only captured his seventh Champions Tour golf title last week, he also carded 'the best final round of my career.' Gilder's closing 63, 7-under-par, gave him the Emerald Coast Classic victory at Milton, Fla. The $217,500 check bumped his Champions Tour earnings to more than $4.3 million in little more than two years. É Marla Runyan of Eugene made the best Boston Marathon showing by an American woman in 10 years this week but was disappointed with her time of 2 hours, 30 minutes, 28 seconds. 'I struggled a lot,' said Runyan, who hoped to run close to 2:25:00. É The Portland Shockwave women's football team will play host to the Tacoma Majestics at 6 p.m. Saturday at Beaverton High.
