Movie buff carves out choice reel estate
If it's out on video or disc, chances are good you'll find it at Mike Clark's Movie Madness Video & More. The store is home to more than 45,000 titles on DVD and VHS, with a selection ranging from classics and foreign films to documentaries and new releases.
Owner Michael Clark opened Movie Madness at 4320 S.E. Belmont St. in 1991 because he got tired, he says, of scouring the city to find what he wanted. 'Portland is an arts city,' he says. 'There was a niche market for hard-to-find films.' Even so, the scale of his success has surprised him.
No other video store in town rivals Movie Madness, named by the Southern California Motion Picture Council as the 'world's best independent video store' in 2000 and this year the 'best in the U.S.' by the Video Software Distributors Association. With up to 100 new members signing up daily, the store's membership base has swelled to more than 73,000.
In addition, Movie Madness is home to an impressive collection of authentic movie memorabilia. 'This is a store for film connoisseurs,' Clark says.
