Fleets may save in private sector
Mike Corbett, a California-based fleet management consultant, says several of his government clients Ñ mostly cities and counties Ñ have outsourced portions of their fleet operations to successfully save money.
One, he said, uses Enterprise Rent-a-Car and leases out its former motor pool lots.
But he cautions that outsourcing does not always cut costs.
'That depends on a lot of different factors,' he says.
Utah privatized its maintenance and repair functions in 2000. Since then, the state has saved about $170,000 per year, according to fleet service officials. Utah's 7,445-vehicle motor pool has a budget of about $40 million per biennium.
