NFL Draft results (Player/Position/College/Team/Round(overall) pick)

Troy Polamalu/S/USC/Pittsburgh/1st(16th) Steelers gave up third- and sixth-round picks to move up and take Polamalu, who should start immediately. Winston native was too good to pass up, coach Bill Cowher says. 'He's special. I think speed is such an asset. I watched this kid play. He's playing the game faster than a lot of people are on the field,' Cowher says.

Nick Barnett/LB/OSU/Green Bay/1st(29th) First linebacker taken in draft. Coach Mike Sherman compares Barnett to young Hardy Nickerson and Ray Lewis. 'He can take the middle 15 to 18 yards when you have both safeties wide,' Sherman says. 'The other (college) linebackers weren't even close to this guy.'

Dennis Weathersby/CB/OSU/Cincinnati/4th(98th) Gunshot wound dropped his stock. Should be healthy by July camp and compete for starting spot. 'You keep hearing stuff about attitude and character. That's been tough,' he says.

George Wrighster/TE/UO/Jacksonville/4th(104th) Will battle veterans Kyle Brady and Pete Mitchell for playing time on team where main focus will be QB competition (Mark Brunell vs. rookie Byron Leftwich).

Onterrio Smith/RB/UO/Minnesota/4th(105th) Ninth running back picked; stock reportedly dropped because of character concerns but could be a steal who challenges Michael Bennett for playing time. Enters camp as favorite to return kicks.

James Lee/DT/OSU/Green Bay/5th(147th) Lee goes where he can learn from one of the best, Gilbert Brown.

Keenan Howry/WR/UO/Minnesota/7th(221st) Slight wide receiver will have to make team as receiver and punt returner.

Undrafted: Thirteen quarterbacks were chosen, and PSU's Juston Wood wasn't one of them, but he signed a free-agent contract with Minnesota. Others looking for free-agent deals: Oregon OT Corey Chambers, DE Darrell Wright and LB David Moretti, Oregon State OG Lee Davis, DT Eric Manning and DB Terrell Roberts, and PSU's RB Saleem Muhammad.
