Under an unusually hot sun, the 2003 Southwest Airlines Grand Floral Parade on Saturday morning rolled out of Memorial Coliseum in Northeast Portland and wound its way across the Willamette River and through downtown. Soft drink and ice cream vendors did a brisk business as spectators played cards, threw footballs and drew chalk pictures on the pavement while waiting for the parade to arrive.
The University of Portland women's soccer team and Coach Clive Charles served as grand marshals; Priscilla Isaacs of Franklin High School reigned as Rose Festival queen.
The 4.2-mile-long parade is the largest single-day spectator event in Oregon and the second-largest all-floral parade in the United States.
