Damon Balch has been hired as director of sales for Salem of Portland, which owns Christian stations KPDQ (800 AM and 93.7 FM) and KFIS (104.1 FM). Balch has been sales director for Citadel Communications, a five-station cluster based in Colorado Springs, Colo. Salem's current sales manager, Brad London, will become station manager for KPDQ AM and FM.

Marcus Hall has been promoted to vice president and senior relationship manager of Wells Fargo HSBC Trade Bank. The bank is a joint venture between Wells Fargo and HSBC Group. Hall had been Wells Fargo's Commercial Banking Group's relationship manager. He is replacing John Metschan, who retired.

Advertising and public relations firm Gard & Gerber has hired Julie Mancini as vice president and Vicki Quick as director of research. Mancini has been the executive director of Literary Arts since it started 15 years ago. Quick has held public relations and research management positions at several large local companies, and she ran her own company for the past four years.

Anderson named Integra's

chief operating officer

Integra Telecom has hired Trent Anderson as its chief operating officer. Anderson returns to the local, long-distance and Internet services company after working at early-stage broadband company, SkyRiver of San Diego, for the past year. Anderson previously worked as senior vice president at Integra from 2000 to 2002.

VirtualDesign adds

Internet videoconference provider VirtualDesign Network has hired Eric Sherman as director of product strategy and Suzanne Hanifin as account executive.

Sherman will work with the product and network development team. He most recently worked for Natural Messaging Inc.

Hanifin last worked for Verizon Information Services in premise sales.

Planar hires leader

for medical business

Beaverton-based flat-panel display manufacturer Planar Systems has appointed Steve Flieder as vice president and general manager of its medical business. That operation is based in Waltham, Mass.

Flieder worked more than 10 years at GE Medical Systems and Siemens Medical Systems.

Ethicspoint hires market

development director

Dick Elslager has joined Ethicspoint as its new director of market development. The company supports confidential Web-based systems and telephone hot lines for reporting company fraud or other problems. In his job, Elslager will draw on his knowledge of federal sentencing guidelines for organizational defendants, health and human services compliance guidelines and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, the federal law requiring accurate and reliable corporate accounting and reporting.

Elslager is a former senior executive at ComplianceLine and Pinkerton AlertLine.

Web-page developer Pop Art has hired Jennifer Lange Schneider as its project manager. Schneider and the account manager will serve as liaisons between clients and the technical and design staff.

Sloan to manage Beaverton shopping center

Chris Sloan is the new manager of Cedar Hills Crossing, the former Beaverton Mall now undergoing a $20 million renovation. Sloan previously worked as the regional director for Burnham Pacific Properties. He's also a real estate broker and a member of the California State Bar.

BLW + Associates' former creative services staff member, R. Gerard Lester, has been promoted to business development manager. The advertising and design agency's owner and creative director, Loren Weeks, says he expects Lester's promotion to bring 'fresh energy' to relationships with clients.

Marketing communications agency CMD has hired Greg Henderson and Keith Danziger as account directors for major clients. Henderson is in charge of the Hewlett-Packard account; he previously worked with Aspen Marketing Services in Boise. Danziger oversees such accounts as Cisco and Hitachi. He most recently was a senior account executive with CKS Partners.

Tara Thomas has joined the Oregon Convention Center as its sales and catering manager. Thomas was most recently catering manager for the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Wilsonville.

Syrcle to lead

youth orchestra

The Portland Youth Philharmonic, the nation's oldest youth orchestra, has named Diane Syrcle as executive director. Syrcle has an active singing career in addition to teaching choir, art and speech. Syrcle came to Oregon to join the Portland Opera's Young Artist Program in 1996 and later directed the opera's Education and Outreach Department.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

adds chief executive officer

The chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas, based in Austin, was selected in a national search to lead the nonprofit's Portland operation. Lynn Thompson has led Big Brothers Big Sisters in Austin for nine years; in that time, it has quadrupled in size and now serves more than 1,300 at-risk children.

Thompson replaces Angie Brummitt as chief executive officer. Brummitt is returning to the private sector after relaunching the Portland organization in 2001.

Silvey to head

Friends of Children

Virginia L. Silvey is the new executive director of Friends of the Children-Portland. The organization provides paid adult mentors to more than 275 at-risk children and teenagers. Silvey has directed health and safety programs and managed community services and AmeriCorps VISTA grants for the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter.

Mary Eisenhart

Insurance expert Mary Eisenhart has been named vice president of the Fournier Group's Oregon division. Eisenhart has been with the insurance firm since 2001, when her own company, Oregon Insurance Agency, and Fournier merged operations. She's been the director of operations since the merger.

Liberty Northwest names

new vice president

Insurance company Liberty Northwest has hired John Shaw as vice president of personal lines. Shaw will be in charge of the company's Personal Lines Center and will oversee underwriting, pricing, product strategies and development. He most recently was regional personal lines manager for Unitrin Multi Lines Insurance in Albany.

Fernandez most recently was a lawyer with Ball Janik LLP, specializing in real estate and land use. He'll focus on property acquisitions and growth in his new job.

Pacific Rim Mortgage has hired Marshall Murray as senior loan officer, concentrating on the west Portland and Lake Oswego markets. The company also has hired Tammy leBlanc Dowden as director of Hispanic Mortgage Programs.

Dowden is fluent in Spanish and runs a translation business. She also has taught English as a second language.

Kaiser Permanente Northwest has named Kathy Fritz its general counsel and compliance officer for its medical and dental groups. She'll monitor 110 physicians and 118 dentists. Fritz was a nurse practitioner before earning a law degree at Lewis & Clark Law School.

The law firm, Kay B. Wakefield P.C., has hired Julie M. Zavin as an associate. Zavin's practice will focus on estate planning, business transactions and real estate. She received her law degree at the University of San Francisco School of Law.

Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital has hired Dr. Michele Metrick. She is board certified in pediatrics and neurology and has special competency in pediatric neurology. Metrick earned her doctorate at the Chicago Medical School and completed her pediatric neurology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She previously worked for Kaiser Permanente Northwest and at Oregon Health & Science University as a clinical assistant professor of neurology.
