Shorthanded Winterhawks call off final preseason game, street fair
Victims of their own success, the Portland Winterhawks have had to cancel a scheduled preseason game and street fair for fans in Beaverton.
The Winterhawks, who have 15 players in NHL training camps, have called off Friday's game against Seattle and the Saturday street fair, both planned for their training facility on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsboro Highway.
The Hawks dressed only 16 skaters for their 8-5 win over Kootenay on Saturday at Kennewick, Wash., and they lost a player to injury in the game and then lost another player on waiver claim from another team.
The Hawks say that many of the attractions planned for the street fair will be offered at their Sept. 23 season opener at the Rose Garden, where they will take on Everett at 7 p.m.
'Having 15 players away at NHL training camps is a testament to the talent we have on our team, and a pretty nice problem to have,' team President Doug Piper said. 'With our players in such demand at the next level, we decided to concentrate our hockey celebration on opening night."
