Community response will help decide future of local mail service in Marylhurst area

The U.S. Postal Service is soliciting community input on evaluating the Marylhurst post office.

Surveys are now being sent to area customers, and a public meeting will soon be held in which local postal service management will share the results of the survey, answer questions and solicit input regarding the time of day the Marylhurst post office will be open.

The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church at 19200 Willamette Drive in West Linn.

The review process is intended to help determine the best course of action for providing postal services to the Lake Oswego and West Linn communities. The process, known as the POST Plan, is being done for certain post offices throughout the nation.

The public meeting will be crucial in the final decision, according to Larry Loumena, POST Plan coordinator. The survey results and the meeting will be weighed in making the decision. The postal service will examine the responses and, unless the community has a strong preference — more than 60 percent — for conducting a discontinuance study for the Marylhurst post office and establishing other sources of services, the department intends to maintain the Marylhurst post office with six hours of window service each weekday.

The postal service is also seeking locally established businesses or organizations to serve as contractor-operated postal retail units in the Lake Oswego-West Linn area.

As listed in the survey, options for action include: keeping the Marylhurst post office open but reducing its hours of operation from eight to six (based on a study of the office workload); discontinuing the office and providing roadside mailbox delivery through a rural carrier; discontinuing the office and finding a suitable alternative location operated by a contractor, likely a local business; conducting a discontinuance study, providing P.O. box service at another nearby post office and relocating P.O. box delivery to that post office.

The Marylhurst post office is located on the campus of Marylhurst University.
