Theresa Whalen was visiting her mother in the Orenco neighborhood when she spotted a man slumped to the ground. Two teens were calling 9-1-1 about the incident but needed help with the street address. Whalen jumped from her car, told the 9-1-1 dispatcher the correct address and began administering CPR.

When Hillsboro firefighter-paramedics arrived, they used a defibrillator to revive the man’s heartbeat.

Doctors said the man had no lasting damage from the incident.

“This is a perfect example of the partnership of citizen bystanders and emergency responders in saving lives,” said Hillsboro Fire Administrative Chief Scott Malone, who joined Mayor Jerry Willey in presenting the lifesaver award. “With the quick application of CPR, the patient has a far greater chance of survival that waiting for our crews to respond even though we’re just minutes away.”
