WLACC events and activities

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Kathy Grant sometimes gets ideas for her art from observing seasonal changes around her.Kathy Grant’s paintings have graced the walls of the West Linn Adult Community Center’s gallery for nearly two months now, and she’s found buyers for several of her works.

Ironically, she’s not really all that interested in selling her paintings; rather, she wants them to go to support good causes. She’s been finding good causes now for years.

Grant grew up in Tulsa where her grandparents exposed her to beautiful art in their home, as well as in Tulsa’s Gilcrease Museum. Eventually, Grant attended Native American tribal gatherings and asked for permission to take their portraits. Many of the Native Americans she approached were less than enthusiastic about having their pictures taken, but when Kathy returned with portraits and presented them to her subjects as gifts — she won them over.

Fast-forward through a career in psychotherapy, and Grant found herself doing aqua therapy at the Providence therapy pool on Macadam Avenue in Portland. The pool walls were bare. So, Kathy painted a picture of a sea turtle and put it up. One of the patients was so taken with it, he offered to buy it, but Grant, being the person that she is, just gave it to him because it seemed to lift his spirit. She then painted eight more turtles and outfitted the entire pool.

“Painting became my way of giving back,” she said.

Today, Grant is a regular attendee at the WLACC’s yoga and pilates classes. When she discovered she could display her paintings in our gallery, she offered to donate the proceeds from any paintings sold to our building expansion fund, and we gratefully accepted.

Her art will be on display until the end of the month, but you can go to her website to see much more. We are especially pleased to have Grant as a benefactor of our building expansion and as a participant in our exercise classes.
