The food brings us together

WLACC events and activities

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Diners work their way through the buffet at Thanksgiving dinner at the WLACC.The West Linn Adult Community Center offers a wealth of activities for seniors. Scanning the weekly calendar below will give you an idea of just how many interests are featured. But the one activity that brings us closest to each other is lunch.

You will recall that one family goal that nearly everyone supports is eating together. It’s what gives us a glimpse into our kids’ lives. It’s what allows us to instill good manners. It’s what allows us to share our experiences. Sharing inexpensive lunches three times a week at the WLACC with other seniors offers similar benefits, and it includes the additional benefit of not having to prepare the meal ourselves!

Our chef, Veda Thomas, tries to serve a variety of meals every month — knowing full well it’s impossible to please all the diners all the time. On Wednesdays we usually serve a simple meal: various soups paired with various kinds of sandwiches. There is always salad, always some kind of dessert and occasionally another side dish. All meals are served buffet-style, so no one leaves hungry. The menu varies Mondays and Fridays.

November lunches will include Swiss steak, scalloped chicken, pasta primavera, pork tenderloin and turkey tetrazzini. On Nov. 16, we will have our annual Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the fixings. All of these meals — including the Thanksgiving dinner — cost only $3. It’s simply the best meal deal in town.

If that wasn’t enough, on the first Wednesday of every month, those with birthdays during that month eat our birthday brunch meal for free. So give serious consideration to joining us for lunch on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday. We’re a friendly, welcoming group, and we’d love to get to know you over a meal.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Call the WLACC at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. Also, all meals listed below are subject to change, but only for the better. Computer classes are offered by appointment between 9 a.m. and noon, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
