Tribe harriers not at full speed yet

Zach Fry leads the boys race until he takes the wrong turn

The Scappoose cross country team isn't barging into the season full speed ahead, but the team showed a lot of promise in the Darrel Deedon Cascade Invitational last Thursday.

The Scappoose boys were hobbled as a team with some runners out nursing injuries. Coach David Harley said he didn't want to bring up his young jayvee boys for the race so they just ran as an incomplete team.

Tribe junior Zach Fry led much of the race, but got separated from the ATV leading the way and ran an extra 300-400 yards before getting back on course. Fry would still finish 10th overall, just 43 seconds out of first.

The Scappoose girls don't have everyone quite up to speed, either. Skylar Fuller would turn in the best finish with a sixth place. Charlie Davidson, who is doing double duty with the soccer team, ran in her first 5K race and was nursing a sore ankle from a soccer match two days before. Still, the state 1,500-meter champion, finished 8th overall. Junior Tia Carnahan, last year's district champion, was behind her in 9th.

Harley said it was hot and the team was not quite in full racing form just yet. He said Carnahan takes a little time to get in top condition, and Davidson is a little tired from both soccer and cross country. Harley noted that after 5A Corvallis, the Scappoose girls dominated both the varsity and jayvee meets. All seven of their girls were in the top 28.

Scappoose has just two Saturday meets coming up. They are at the Molalla Invitational this Saturday, and at the Nike Pre-National Meet at Portland Meadows on Sept. 24.
