Lady Lions post strong showing in jamboree

Volleyball team goes 3-1 in one-game matches
by: John Brewington HARD HIT—St. Helens’ Brooke Cathers smacks the ball during a jamboree at Liberty last week.

Jamborees are just a chance for teams to get their feet wet before the real matches get under way, but the St. Helens Lady Lions announced their intention to be in the mix of the Northwest Oregon Conference with a good outing at Liberty on Thursday.

St. Helens won three of their four matches in the jamboree, topping Milwaukie, 25-14, Wilsonville 25-22, and Rex Putnam, 25-19. They lost to Parkrose, 12-25.

'We played very well as a team,' St. Helens coach Tom Ray said. 'Our serve receive was great in all but the Parkrose set.'

Ray said the team had 90 percent serving and had 39 attack kills in the match.

'We accomplished what we set out to do, ' Ray noted. 'I tried different back row players throughout the night.'

Top finishes at the jamboree included Parkrose (4-0), St. Helens (3-1), Sherwood (3-1), Wilsonville (2-2), and Liberty (2-2). Sherwood won the 5A state championship last season, beating Liberty. They had a rematch in the first round on Thursday.

'It's going to be a competitive season,' Ray added.

Individual stats from the jamboree included: Jillian Ross, 20-20 serving with three aces, 89 percent passing; Jennifer Steinke, 85 percent passing, 7-8 serving; Kylie Reinholdt, 84 percent passing; Lauren Boles, 20-20 serving with seven aces; Kayla Brumbles, 6-7 serving, 12 kills; Gabby Susee, five kills, three block kills.

St. Helens began league play on Tuesday at Wilsonville. They host Rex Putnam this Thursday in their first home match. They are at Sherwood Sept. 20.
