Beaverton Girl Scouts schedule open house

Event is planned at Valley Caltholic High School

Girls grades K-12 interested in Girl Scouts are invited to an open house to meet current Beaverton-area Girl Scouts, try Girl Scout activities and learn more about the Girl Scout program.

The open house will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Valley Catholic High School in the gym. Valley Catholic is located at 4275 S.W. 148th Ave. in Beaverton, off Murray Boulevard at TV Highway. Both girls and parents/guardians are encouraged to attend.

The event will include activities for girls as well as information sessions for parents and guardians. Activities will be run by Beaverton-area Girl Scout troops. No registration is required, and the event is free.

The focal point of today's Girl Scout program is the Girl Scout leadership experience, organizers say. The program engages girls in discovering themselves, connecting with others and taking action to make the world a better place. Even at the youngest ages of Girl Scouting, girls can gain leadership skills they will carry with them throughout their lives.

Girls can belong to Girl Scout troops, where they meet regularly under the direction of a volunteer leader and share their Girl Scout experience. They can also experience Girl Scouting by working on individual projects, going to camp and participating in numerous councilwide activities and events throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

'Girl Scouting is for every girl, everywhere,' said Amanda Cottam, lifetime Girl Scout and organizer of special events for individually registered Girl Scouts, 'In the words of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouting, 'the work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.''
