Cedar Hills church will celebrate 60th anniversary with a bash
The Cedar Hills United Church of Christ will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Sunday, and everyone's invited.
The church is located at 11695 S.W. Park Way.
'The service is at 10 o'clock, and the party starts at 11,' said Pastor Mary Sue Evers, who has been at the church for nine years. It will run until 2, she added.
The day's special events will include live music, a barbecue, a storyteller, games and more. People are invited to bring along their wedding and baptism pictures and other memorabilia to share.
A local band, The Magnets - formerly known as The Chick Magnets - will kick things off, said Evers, and that will be followed by storyteller Mary Louise Sterry.
'It is the 60th anniversary of the church,' said Evers. 'We were founded, along with the Cedar Hills neighborhood, in 1961. So the neighborhood and the church all grew up together.'
In the early years, she explained, 'this truly was a community church and absolutely everyone came to it' - including the occasional Catholic and, according to some accounts, a Jewish person or two.
'We still like to think of ourselves as a community church,' said Evers, adding that a food drive held last week produced many times more than the amount they set out to collect.
It's not necessary to be a member of the church to come to the anniversary celebration, said Evers. Everyone is welcome.
'Even though we were founded as a community church, we are a United Church of Christ, and we're an open and affirming United Church of Christ, which means we welcome everyone.'
She did have one request, though.
'It would be terrific if they would call the church and RSVP so we had a head count for the barbecue,' Evers added.
