Firefighters always eager to serve

Letters to the Editor - Nov 21st

I would like to correct a statement regarding the quote that was attributed to me in the Nov. 8 edition of the Estacada News. It does not accurately reflect my views.

It’s not the fire chief’s decision when a bond is placed before the voters. That is a decision that is made by the Board of Directors. We are sensitive to the needs of our community in these economic times. We also realize we have a lot of work to do to build confidence and educate you about our needs.

We do have problems with the current facility, but it's not all about lack of space, seismic problems, bad plumbing and bad electrical.

It's also about creating an atmosphere that encourages our volunteers to be at the station, ready to respond. We have career staff, but we also rely heavily upon volunteers for emergency responses. We want them at the station so that there are minimal delays when you need them.

The Fire District Board of Directors met on the third Thursday of November, where they discussed solutions for our fire station. Several of the options are temporary solutions and funding will come from reserve funds that were intended to help pay for a new fire station project. These decisions belong to the directors and they welcome your input.

Finally, I would like to affirm that your fire department is here for you. Day or night, the men and women of Estacada Fire will respond to your needs.

We expect a high degree of professionalism and integrity from our people while serving you. Our members have a desire to serve, and courage to act.

Bob Morrisey

Estacada Fire Chief

Editor's note: A story on the front page of the Nov. 8 edition of the Estacada News regarding the Fire District bond — that was defeated in the Nov. 6 election — mistakenly attributed a quote to Fire Chief Bob Morrisey. The quote, spoken by another person, appeared in an earlier story. The Estacada News deeply regrets the error.
