This years theme is 'Why Crayfish Swims Backward'

The Friends of Tryon Creek kicked off its 18th annual Tall Tale Writing Contest for kindergarten through sixth-grade students. This year’s theme is “Why Crayfish Swims Backward.”

Awards will be given for first place, second place and honorable mention in each grade level. Prizes include gift certificates to the Tryon Creek Nature Center ranging from $5 to $25 and Friends of Tryon Creek camp discounts. The contest is free. Entries must be received by March 15, 2013.

The contest promotes the Friends’ mission — to connect people to the natural world and inspire an ethic of environmental stewardship in all — by encouraging children to think about nature using their imagination, language skills and curiosity. Over the years the contest has grown, with nearly 400 students from Hillsboro to Clackamas participating in 2012.

The contest continues to be an opportunity for children to hone their writing skills while tapping into their creativity and stimulating their innate interest in nature.
