St. Helens closes out win with 23 point third quarter

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Jared Bonney goes up for a bucket during last Friday's game with The Dalles-Wahtonka. Bonney had 10 points in the win.The St. Helens Lions picked up their second win in three days with a 58-49 over The Dalles-Wahtonka in their home opener.

The game was close for the first half of the first period, but St. Helens started building a lead by the midpoint mark. A Cody Beisley three, free throws from Nathan Hunter and Jared Bonney, and a put-back by Gage Bumgardner helped the Lions stay on top for good.

The Lions held TDW to just five points in the second period, and built upon their lead. Cody Galvin had a three and the first five points for the Lions in the second. St. Helens led by 10 at the break, 26-16.

The Lions’ Jake Ramiskey, who had paced St. Helens to a 49-37 win over Scappoose on Wednesday with 29 points, got busy in the third period. Ramiskey had only four points in the first half, but he would score 13 in the third to put the game on ice. He hit a three to start the period, and would have two three-point plays in the period. Galvin’s three with three seconds remaining gave St. Helens a 25-point, 49-24 lead.

St. Helens would have their biggest lead of the game when Ramiskey hit a three early in the fourth period. It was 54-27 at that point. The Dalles-Wahtonka would cut the lead with a 10-2 run in the last five minutes.

Although it’s really early to mean anything, the Lions 2-0 record has them currently tied for first with Corvallis and Marshfield in the Oregon School Activities Association power rankings.

St. Helens is on the road this week. They travelled to Hillsboro on Tuesday, facing former Scappoose High Coach Ryan Svenson’s team. On Friday, the squad is at McMinnville. The team will host Aloha on Dec. 11.
