A large contingent of underclassmen bolsters this years team

The Lakeridge wrestling team is slowly building back its numbers and taking steps forward to becoming a competitive team in the TRL again.

The Pacers have a handful of strong returning wrestlers along with a large freshman class that coach Adrian Borgeson hopes is the future of the program.

“We're still young and in the rebuilding phase but we're definitely improving,” Borgeson said.

The Pacers return heavyweight Joey Miller who Borgeson says should place at regionals this year.

Jake Oelrich also returns at 160 pounds.

“Jake should win a lot of matches for us this year and could definitely place at regionals as well,” Borgeson said.

A pair of sophomore transfers in Will and Justin Alvarado should also make a big impact for the Pacers.

Two freshmen will also step in and help the team this year in Sergio Mendez and Sam Wertz.

The team is already in better shape with depth that it was last year when it only fielded four wrestlers.

“It's a young group but we have a lot of kids with a bunch of heart. We definitely have a few kids that are going to surprise some people,” Borgeson said.

The Pacers will still give up a handful of weights in most of its dual meets this year but the team should gain valuable experience as the year progresses.

“Really the goal of this season is building confidence, development and retention of our younger guys. If we can do those things we'll be on the right track,” Borgeson said.

Lakeridge will compete in a handful of competitive tournaments before opening up its league matches.

The Pacers will wrestle in the Lincoln and Tualatin tournaments coming up along with the Northwest Duals.
