by: RITA A. LEONARD - The toppled willow tree at Johnson Creek Park was nearly hollow at the base.A large creek-side willow tree at the south end of Johnson Creek Park chose Thanksgiving weekend to fall. While covered with a healthy canopy of green leaves, the base of the trunk turned out to be almost completely hollowed out by rot and decay.

The willow trunk crashed across the park's rustic wood fence, but appeared to do little damage, since the root ball supported it above the top fence railing.

Instead, the downed tree opened up a new vista of scenery across the creek – a regular occurrence at this Sellwood park, subject to the vagaries of both Crystal Springs Creek and Johnson Creek.
