Lunch for a good cause

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - A group of WLACC seniors pose before sitting down to an Albertina Kerr luncheon. Early this month, about 30 seniors from the West Linn Adult Community Center visited the Albertina Kerr Center for lunch. It’s an annual Christmas trip that we promote to support the mission of the Kerr Center, buy some gifts from the well-stocked gift shop and enjoy a delicious lunch.

The Albertina Kerr Center has been in existence, in one form or another, for more than 100 years. Over those years, it’s provided services to homeless men, women, children, foster care families and children with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. We at the WLACC enjoy supporting such worthwhile programs.

This year’s group offered support in the gift shop by buying antique bowls, Christmas decorations, jackets, ice buckets, blouses, scarves and dresses. Then we offered support by buying lunch. This year the menu included baked chicken served with apple butter, potatoes, carrots and beans accompanied by an Oregon salad of spinach, pecans, cranberries and feta cheese. Dessert consisted of individual pumpkin pies.

We plan to go to the Albertina Kerr Center for lunch again next holiday season. If you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Call the WLACC at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. All meals listed below are subject to change, but only for the better. Computer classes are offered by appointment between 9 a.m. and noon, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

WLACC Gift Shop — Come visit the best-kept Christmas shopping secret in town! You never know what treasures you might find. The gift shop features an expanded collection of greeting cards and recently we received an assortment of beautiful vintage Spode Copeland dishware in the Rose Briar pattern. The assortment includes a teapot, five teacups, 17 saucers and more.

Also new to our shop are locally made sterling silver rings and earrings with genuine stones, such as amethysts, blue topaz, garnets, opals and more. The store offers locally made roll-on bracelets made of colorful tiny beads.

Please remember our gift shop as you are downsizing or going through things after the holidays. We are happy to accept many kinds of donated items as long as they’re in good shape. All the gift shop workers are volunteers and fundraising goes toward our building expansion.

The WLACC Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gift shop accepts cash, checks and well-behaved children.
