Heroism and sustainability efforts are among the honors

The city of Lake Oswego recently honored a handful of employees for going above and beyond the duties of their jobs.

Each year, the city recognizes employees who have excelled in five areas: sustainability, safe practices and wellness, customer service, heroism and special accomplishments. They are recognized at an employee luncheon.

This year’s awards included:

Sustainability: Webmistress Erika Roberts, who has run the city’s Ebay store for nearly 10 years, managing an effort to recycle aging but working electronics by selling them on the popular Internet site. More than 1,100 items have been sold - and reused as a result - through the Ebay shop, according to the city. That has netted the city more than $85,000 and avoided spending on electronics disposal.

Safe practices and wellness: Human Resources Director Megan Phelan, who leads and participates in a variety of wellness programs, including weekly walks, a wellness committee, pedometer challenge and Weight Watchers program.

Customer service: Tony Garcia, who is responsible for the maintenance of city sports fields as well as local elementary and junior high fields permitted through the city’s parks department. He also volunteered to act as a direct liaison to schools and youth sports organizations, and he comes in on nonwork days to host field maintenance clinics for coaches.

Heroism: April Beneditti, who demonstrated heroism when she happened upon a pedestrian-automobile collision near city hall in February. On her way to work at the city’s 9-1-1 dispatch center when she saw the accident scene, she stopped and provided support to the victim.

Special accomplishments: Carissa Barrett and Corissa Holmes, who were both instrumental to developing a new city website. Barrett contributed to the website’s creation, development, implementation and ongoing enhancements, particularly with the library’s site, according to the city. Holmes helped figure out the best ways to provide information to the public and responds to website requests with remarkable “speed and professionalism,” according to the city.
