Ed Burton to speak at breakfast

OREGON CITY - Area football enthusiasts are invited to a kickoff breakfast for the Friday, Sept. 30, game between Oregon City and West Linn high school football teams.

The Oregon City Optimists are hosting the breakfast at 6:30 a.m. next Tuesday (Sept. 27) at the Oregon City Elks Lodge.

Former Oregon City coach Ed Burton will be the featured speaker, and Gladstone mayor and West Linn graduate Wade Byers will emcee. Players and coaches will be in attendance.

Burton was head football coach at Oregon City from 1986 to his retirement in 1998. His 1996 team reached the state final.

Tickets are on sale to the public for $10 and will be available at the door.

The Oregon City vs. West Linn rivalry is heralded as the oldest uninterrupted high school football rivalry west of the Mississippi. The Sept. 30 game will be the 91st consecutive game between the two schools, in a series that started in 1921.
