The Valley Catholic boys cross country team aims to win it all
BEAVERTON - The Valley Catholic boys cross country team was pretty darned good in 2010.
After all, the Valiants ran to victory in District 1 competition and then to second at the Class 3A/2A/1A state meet.
Now, however, Valley Catholic wants the whole enchilada.
'As long as we remain healthy and focused, I think we have a group of guys that have the experience and fitness to be very competitive this season,' said Valley Catholic coach Tommy Manning.
This year's Valiant team will be led by the senior duo of Andy Holstrom and Connor Richard, along with fellow seniors Danny Hernandez and Anthony Alfieri and sophomore Cooper Roach.
Holstrom and Richard finished second and third at district a year ago, then backed that up by running to sixth and seventh at the Class 3A/2A/1A state.
'Connor Garcia and Andy Holstrom have been consistent front runners on the team, and I think they will perform well again this season,' Manning said. 'They both had a good summer of training.'
Alfieri, meanwhile, was sixth at district last year, while Roach was ninth and Hernandez 13th.
'It looks like Danny Hernandez and Anthony Alfieri will both be running in the top five for us again this season,' along with Roach, Manning said. 'I think we have a solid group of guys that have the potential to run fast this season.'
Senior Aidan McLeod and sophomore Sam Teague will also bolster the Valley Catholic roster.
In District 1 competition, Manning expects Clatskanie and Rainier to once again field strong teams, while some of the district's top individuals will likely come from Clatskanie and Oregon Episcopal
'If we remain focused, train hard, and stay healthy day in a day out, we will fare well at districts and get to state,' Manning added.
