Corbett man dies while surfing on Oregon Coast

Duncan Green McCowen, 43, of Corbett died while surfing at Short Sands Beach, which is in Tillamook County's Oswald West State Park.
At about 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, other surfers noticed his surfboard flipping in the surf, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman.
After a short search, the surfers found the man unconscious and exhausted. They brought him to shore and performed CPR on him until emergency responders arrived.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flew him to Tillamook County General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Oregon State Police is investigating the drowning. Emergency personnel from the agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue, Manzanita Ambulance, Manzanita Department of Public Safety and Tillamook County Sheriff's Office also responded
McCowen reportedly was a novice surfer and ocean conditions were described as very rough, Hastings said.
