The St. Helens Lady Lions volleyball team lost at Sherwood on Tuesday but bounced back with an impressive three-game win over visiting Parkrose Thursday night.

Sherwood, the defending state champions, blitzed St. Helens in three games (15-25, 19-25, 20-25). It wasn't the Lady Lions best effort.

'In the Sherwood match, we gave them too many 'free balls,'' St. Helens coach Tom Ray said. 'Last night we did the opposite. Parkrose gave us too many free balls. It was really exciting to watch a team actually play like they practice.'

The Lady Lions had some impressive digs, and some big-time attack kills in the 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 win.

Kayla Beeler was 15 of 17 serving and 83 percent passing. Kayla Brumbles was 91 percent passing and had nine kills. Abbie Hanson had eight kills and seven block kills. Gabby Susee had six block kills. Jillian Ross was 17 of 17 serving and 91 percent passing.

Against Sherwood, Brumbles had six kills, was 10 of 10 serving, and 81 percent passing. Haley Twilleager was 89 percent serving and 82 percent passing. Brooke Cathers was seven of seven serving, 78 percent passing and had three kills.

The win lifted St. Helens into a tie for fourth in the league with Parkrose and Rex Putnam, both teams they have beaten. St. Helens hosted Milwaukie on Tuesday this week, and travels to league-leading Liberty on Thursday.
