Pioneers hold a slim halftime lead over No. 5 Lava Bears
FOOTBALL-Sandy in search of first league win Friday at home vs. improved Rex Putnam
Coming off a second half collapse to the Wilsonville Wildcats, the Sandy Pioneers traveled to Bend to face the No. 5-ranked Lava Bears in a nonleague game Friday.
Still, fine-tuning a new offensive system, the Pioneers struggled to put points on the board. But their defense held Bend to their lowest point total this season. Kyle Bateman's 35-yard interception return gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead at the half, but the Lava Bears found the end zone three times in the second half to pick up the win and move to 4-0 on the season.
Cody Welty had Sandy's other touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Justin Adams in the fourth quarter. The two hooked up again to add the two-point conversion.
