CC Rider gets fare hike following finance woes

Transit official plans to review impact of changes over time

Riders of Columbia County Rider's bus service will begin paying more for fares starting Oct. 1.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved an increase in transit fares in mid-September. The increases vary by type of ride and distance. Traveling one way from Scappoose to St. Helens, for example, will now cost $4 for the general public, up from $3.30.

The last CC Rider fare increase was in late 2008 and since then ridership figures are approaching record levels.

In an Aug. 17 Spotlight story, Janet Wright, county transit administrator, said a transit committee will begin reviewing the impact of the changes in about six months.

The increases come at a tough fiscal time for the county transit system as local, state and federal allocations, which have subsidized the service, are declining. Two commissioner hearings were held on the topic last month.
