The Vikings take their 1-0 Big Sky record to Idaho State (2-2 overall, 1-1 conference). The Bengals have become competitive this season under new coach Mike Kramer and with a potent air attack (394 passing yards per game). Kickoff is 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday from Pocatello.
In Class 6A, top games Friday include David Douglas-Central Catholic at Jeld-Wen Field (7 p.m.), Jesuit at Sunset (7:30 p.m.), Grant at Heritage (5 p.m., McKenzie Stadium) and Skyview (Wash.) versus Lincoln at Roosevelt (7 p.m.). PIL 5A play has Franklin at Cleveland (7 p.m.), Benson at Jefferson (6 p.m.), and Madison at Wilson (7 p.m.). Class 4A Roosevelt is at Sheridan (7 p.m.).
Portland's Steven Evans, a sophomore midfielder from Central Catholic, led UP to a 3-0 record last week and was named national player of the week after getting three goals and two assists. The Pilots (5-2-1) open West Coast Conference action at Santa Clara on Friday at San Francisco on Sunday. … The Pilot women are 5-5-1 going into their next match, Oct. 6 at BYU. … Portland State's women (4-6-0) are at Sacramento State on Friday. ...
