Safeway grand opening Sunday

new safeway
The new Madras Safeway is set to open Sunday at 6 a.m.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Georgie Keffer, a 39-year employee of the Madras Safeway, will have the cutting honor.
The Madras High School band will perform at the store from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The first 500 people in the new store will receive Oregon lottery tickets. The store is also holding a drawing between Oct. 21 and Nov. 15 for free groceries for a year, a $2,500 value. The winner is expected to be drawn Nov. 19.
The 55,000 square foot store will include several improvements over the existing store, which was built in the 1970s. More checkstands, a "from scratch" bakery with state-of-the-art equipment, expanded deli and Chinese and Mexican cuisine, a gas station, and expansions in nearly every department highlight the supermaket. The store is 100 percent handicapped accessible.
The Madras Safeway also the first in Central Oregon to feature the chain's new interior decore and marketing package, featuring rich, soft shades with black and purple accents. Bright wall graphics and inlayed floor tiles accentuate departments and products.
Safeway has had a store in Madras since 1937. The supermarket, which was built over the summer, will remain open 24 hours a day.
