Former Buffs proud of 4A champ

Madras can claim ties to a number of champions these days, including a quarterback for Oregon's 4A high school football champion McNary Celts of Keizer.
Ryan Rufener, McNary's quarterback, is the grandson of long-time Madras residents Judy Gallagher and the late Fred Gallagher, and Ruth and Louie Rufener.
Both of Ryan's parents, Jeri Ann and Ron Rufener, graduated from Madras High School.
One of Ryan's uncles, Scott Gallagher quarterbacked Madras High in the 1970's and another uncle, Pat Gallagher, was a Madras High runner of the 1970's who was recruited by Idaho State. Ron Rufener also played a year of football at Madras High. Judy Gallagher, who retired from Jefferson County Middle School, attended all but one of McNary's football games this year and is one of Ryan's biggest fans.
McNary beat Sheldon in the finals on a day when Rufener completed five of nine passes as part of a convincing win which let the Celts add to the title head coach Tom Smythe had led McNary to in 1997.
