Legislators organize meeting to discuss future of Government Camp facility
In response to concerns about the scheduled closure of a Government Camp rest stop, announced recently by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Sen. Chuck Thomsen and Rep. Mark Johnson have organized a town hall meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the Douglas Fir Room of the Resort on the Mountain, 68010 E. Fairway Ave., Welches.
'All we need is a true round-table discussion where a clear plan to keep this open comes out,' Thomsen said.
At the meeting, people will have an opportunity to offer ideas on how to save the facility that costs ODOT $200,000 per biennium.
The rest area in Government Camp is the only such facility between Portland and Madras. It is located on Highway 26 on U.S. Forest Service land, and is operated by ODOT.
'I think this is an important facility for some travelers on our highways, and we need to ensure that this decision is economically justified and not an arbitrary decision,' Johnson said.
