>Winning becoming habitual
Culver High's wrestling team continued what it hopes can be a championship trail by winning the Jo-Hi Invitational tournament Saturday in Joseph.
Paced by wins from Junior Baltazar, at 119 pounds; John Urbach, at 145; Mark Coy, at 171 pounds; and Lance Roberts, at 189, Culver crushed its challengers in the 12-team event.
Spurred along by seconds from Adam Kinley, at 112; Travis Kinley, at 125; Brian Stills, at 130, Bryce Miller, at 152 and Ross McWilliams, at 215, the Bulldogs outscored second-place Nestucca, 269.5-157.
Coincidentally, the far-flung district in which Culver competes includes Nestucca. Rounding out the top five teams in the event were Enterprise, Pine Eagle and Imbler.
Coach J.D. Alley of Culver said it's not unusual at all for three or four state champions to come out of the group of champions at the Jo-Hi event so he was pleased.
He noted a battle between Urbach and Rick Gannon of Alsea as just one example of potential previews of state tournament battles that took place at Joseph.
Still more such state tournament preview matches are likely to be taking place Friday and Saturday for Culver, when it takes part in the Oregon Classic at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds.
