It took four post players plus patience, but Madras High's boys basketball White Buffalos slowed The Dalles' Dallan Labrum enough to emerge from their road trip Friday with a 46-40 overtime win.
Madras made the most of a second-chance after surrendering a 31-25 lead it owned with less than six minutes left in the game in which the 6-foot, 10-inch Labrum led The Dalles with 15 points.
Jacoby Ellsbury came within inches, or a kind bounce on his shot at the end of regulation, noted Coach Evan Brown of Madras, of giving Madras a 35-33 win. Instead the teams went four extra minutes.
Both teams slowed their scoring pace considerably in the final eight minutes of regulation before Lucas Conway came up with the first steal and two of the first four baskets of overtime for the Buffs, on his way to five points in the four extra minutes of play. A free throw with 10 seconds left capped both the Madras win and Conway's scoring.
Ellsbury continued confounding Madras opponents as he shot and sliced his way to enough baskets to finish with 17 of the Buffs points.
Fellow senior Jeff Barnes joined Ellsbury as a double-figure scorer with 10 points. The rest of Madras' scoring in the win at The Dalles included five points for Conway, four for Joey McConnell and three for Tim Kirsch, along with five for Colter Barnes, who was in his second game back after a long recovery from an accident in Madras' first football game that was heavily evaluated in terms of its possibly permamently limiting the use of his right arm or hand. But Colter Barnes backed up Jeff Barnes, McConnell, Kirsch and even Dominique Easterling in The Dalles as he continued conditioning himself for further playing time.
"We used up 17 fouls between our four post players," Coach Brown noted of the rotation the Buffs sent in against The Dalles and its tandem led by Labrum. Limiting The Dalles to just one double-figure scorer further helped Madras.
Madras is on the road Friday, Feb. 8, at La Salle, after its Feb. 5 home game against Sherwood, which started after deadlines for this issue. Another home game, against Estacada, is on tap for the Buffs next Tuesday, Feb. 12.
After a bye later in that week, Madras closes the regular season with Tuesday and Thursday games, Feb. 19 at Wilsonville and Feb. 21 against Valley Catholic.
