St. John volunteer fireman of quarter

Nathan St. John has been honored as Volunteer Firefighter of the Quarter by the Jefferson County Fire Department.
St. John, 17, is a junior at Madras High School and one of the youngest volunteer firefighters. He has been with the department for nine months and received the honor for the months of September through December. The fire department gives the award based on several factors, including training hours, calls taken and community service work.
St. John regularly puts in between two and three hours per week but responded to an extraordinary number calls during the quarter.
"It was an honor," St. John said of receiving the award. "Especially for someone as new to the department as I was."
