Metro football kicks off league season on Friday

The Metro's six football teams get down to business for real on Friday with the start of the 2011 league season
by: Miles Vance METRO READY — Sunset’s Cole Abdie and his teammates take a 4-0 record into 2011 Metro League play.

The road that was the 2011 non-league football schedule had more than a few bumps - and one pleasant surprise - for the Metro League's six varsity football teams.

Defending state champion and Metro favorite Aloha went just 2-2 in non-league action and battled injury problems along the way.

Perennial power Jesuit was, like Aloha, 2-2 after another of its annual killer non-league schedules.

And Sunset, in year two under head coach Faustin Riley, went 4-0 and outscored its last three opponents 162-0.

But all that is history, and save for the statewide RPI rankings that won't mean something until the end of the year, none of it will help a bit come kickoff time on Friday night.

Friday night's games (with non-league records in parentheses) will include:

- Aloha (2-2) at Westview (0-4), 7:30 p.m.

- Beaverton (2-2) at Southridge (1-3), 7:30 p.m.

- And Jesuit (2-2) at Sunset (4-0), 7:30 p.m.

After Friday, league play continues for four more weeks, followed by Class 6A state Play-In games on Nov. 4 and the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Nov. 11-12.
