Seniors can 'strut their stuff' at Ballroom Dance Company
Tigard venue welcomes seniors on second Friday of the month
The Ballroom Dance Company is hosting dance lessons for beginners on the second Friday of every month, followed by a dance where seniors can strut their stuff and show off their moves.
The Second Friday Social Dance features lessons and performances in ballroom, Latin, swing and other social dances.
Shawn Gardner, the hostess for the dance and the instructor for the lesson, has been dancing since she was 10 years old and has taught for more than 14 years. She was crowned national champion in both bronze and silver international standard at the 2007 USA Dance National Championships.
"The Second Friday Social Dance is perfect for beginners and people of all skill levels, and it promises to be a fun social event," Gardner said.
Gardner began the Second Friday Social Dance in April after the King City Dance Club decided to end its monthly dances, which were held one Friday evening each month for years.
"I wanted to carry on the social dance so that people who love to dance have a place to go," Gardner said.
While the dance caters to seniors, it is open to people of all ages. Extra dancers are available so that attendees do not have to bring a partner.
Each Second Friday Social Dance features performances by a few of the professionals at the Ballroom Dance Company. On Aug. 12, Allen Stocker and Lea Trueblood performed a waltz for the seniors.
"Anyone can do a waltz, but to do it in good form takes technique and practice, and that is what I am trying to show," Stocker said.
The lesson for beginners starts at 6:30 p.m., and the dance starts at 7 and lasts until 9:30 p.m. General admittance is $7 and $5 for seniors. The lesson and dance are held in the Champions Room of the Ballroom Dance Company, located at 8900 S.W. Commercial St. in Tigard.
