Lakers roll over Canby in league opener
Second-ranked Lake Oswego made quick work of Canby on Friday, scoring on nearly every possession in a 41-14 win.
Despite being undefeated this year the Lakers have had a pattern of starting slowly in games but against the Cougars they took control early.
Lake Oswego scored on its first possession on a one-yard run by Steven Long. They then forced a three-and-out and went 64 yards in five plays to take an early 14-0 lead.
Canby responded with an impressive drive, going 80 yards in 16 plays and converting on fourth down twice, scoring on a three-yard run by Noah Abel.
But the Cougars still had no answer for Lake Oswego's offense. The Lakers went up 21-7 on a two-yard run by Grant Taylor. Lake Oswego added another first-half score on an 18-yard pass from Alex Matthews to Zach Walen.
The Cougars got a nice kick-off return with 40 seconds left in the half but missed a 31-yard field goal heading into the break.
Canby opened the second half with the ball and marched down the field, getting a one-yard touchdown run by Abel on fourth-and-goal. The Cougars then recovered a Laker fumble and suddenly were in position to get right back in the game.
However, Lake Oswego's defense held, stopping Canby on a fourth down conversion attempt and the team then went 70 yards, culminating with a two-yard score by Taylor.
Lake Oswego put the game away early in the fourth quarter when Walen picked off a pass and returned it to the Canby 20-yard line.
Two plays later, Josiah Krauthammer scored on a 10-yard run to cap the scoring.
Lake Oswego will play undefeated cross-town rival Lakeridge next week and Canby will travel to Lincoln.
