As is the custom, the Ardenwald/Johnson Creek Neighborhood Association held its National Night Out party - and kicked off their month-long weekly concert season - with a Thursday night party on August 4th.
'We're doing a Hawai'ian luau theme,' explained the neighborhood association's co-chair, Jeff Davis. 'My wife, Sherry Campbell, suggested it at a neighborhood meeting, because she is involved with a ukulele group. We all talked about it, and decided to have a party with this island theme, featuring Kaloku and the Krew, a rockin' Hawaiian band.'
The best thing about events like these is bringing neighbors together, Davis added. 'Neighbors meet one another, and meet our community safety people, too. The Milwaukie Chief of Police rode in on his bike; firefighters visited; and everyone got to meet in a comfortable setting.'
Joe Campbell, the neighborhood association's treasurer, looked over the growing crowd and agreed, adding, 'It's fun to see that people really appreciate it. They really appreciate it - it's something fun to do.'
As the concert began, neighbors settled down - some with plates of Hawai'ian food from Bamboo Hawai'ian Grill, some with Hungry Heart Cupcakes, others with popcorn and other treats from the Milwaukie High's Dance Team.
In the warm afternoon sun, we thought we caught a glimpse of a swaying palm tree in out of the corner of our eye.
