City of Portland approves 50s bikeway, pedestrian improvements

Project provides safer north-south travel route

Eastside Portland bicyclists will have a new north-south bikeway along 52nd Avenue and nearby avenues that enable safer travel between Woodstock Boulevard and Sandy Boulevard.

Portland City Council approved the new 4.3-mile project last week. It's funded by a $1.5 million federal grant.

The project includes a variety of pedestrian safety improvements, as well as reduced speed limits and bicycle route markings on the street, known as sharrows.

The city held more than 40 public meetings to discuss the project.
