>Culver duo joined by Alley as part of Team Oregon group
Culver High's wrestling success continues.
Earlier this month Culver head coach J.D. Alley accompanied wrestlers Junior Baltazar and Adam Kinley, the champion and runner up at their weight in the state tournament, to a select competition in Salem. The purpose of the wrestling there was to from a Team Oregon.
A collection of juniors and sophomores, one from each weight, Team Oregon is comprised of all the wrestlers who beat out the top finishers from each level (4A, 3A and 2A/1A) at their weights at Salem.
Both Baltazar and Kinley made that team which is going to Newark, Del., for a national event in a dual meet format. Teams from other states will be competing to catch the eye of Junior Olympic level coaches, among others, Alley noted.
The one challenge in getting there is that each wrestler is expected to come up with about $600, said Alley, to cover their flying, lodging and other expenses. He appreciates all that the Jefferson County community has done to help the program in making a trip to Florida last winter as well as cheer them on to the Oregon Classic title at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. There will be hundreds of competitors with a guarantee of three days of intense competition for all the teams.
Alley has been honored as well. He is coaching the group of the best underclass high school wrestlers in the state, from a combination of all divisions from the 1A-2A group that Culver is in to the 4A teams from all corners of the state.
The Oregon team is comprised of the 14 winners from the wrestling held at Salem.
Those who can help offset any costs of the travel are asked by Alley to contact him at either 546-8632 or 948-3520.
